Adrian Friedel
  • BSc (EnvSc) (Flinders)

people_adrian Adrian has been at Outback Ecology since April 2008, and works in the Rehabilitation, Monitoring & Completion service group. He is currently engaged in Ecosystem Function Analysis surveys and workshops and plant-health surveys. This includes using collected data to help determine appropriate completion goals and target criteria for specific mine site rehabilitation. Adrian's other key duties include method design and development, service group support and project management. His monitoring projects include a broad range of landscape types, from dry arid to wet tropical environments, and include mine sites in Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia, and the Northern Territory. Adrian holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, with an Ecology major, from Flinders University (South Australia). Between 2005 and 2008, Adrian worked in Port Augusta, South Australia, as a Rangeland Assessment Consultant. His key duties included remote field monitoring and botanical surveys on pastoral leases; consultation and collaboration with pastoralists and allied government departments; development and delivery of workshops and training for both industry professionals and community members.

 
Dr David Jasper

people_david David is a Director and General Manager of Outback Ecology. Since joining Outback Ecology in 2002, David has managed projects in soil assessments, developing completion criteria, tailings rehabilitation, topsoil management, characterisation and management of mine wastes to optimise reconstructed soils, and plant uptake of metals. These projects have been exclusively for mining and oil and gas operations, including BHP Billiton (Pilbara, Olympic Dam, Nickel West), Chevron (WA Oil, Gorgon) Rio Tinto (Pilbara, Argyle), Iluka (Eneabba), and Alcoa. A recent particular focus has been developing completion criteria for major operations in the Pilbara, Kimberley, and south-west of WA. Through his former role as Director of the UWA Centre for Land Rehabilitation, David gained a broad exposure to industry liaison, research project development, project management, and training. David retains a role at UWA as Adjunct Associate Professor in Soil Science.

 
Dr Veronica Campagna

people_veronicaVeronica leads the Aquatic Ecology Group at Outback Ecology, where the emphasis of the work is on assessing impacts on inland lakes and subterranean fauna studies (both stygofauna and troglofauna) for the mining industry. Since starting with Outback Ecology in 2003 she has been instrumental in improving the quality assurance and sample assessment processes within the group. Veronica has a PhD in Environmental Biology from Curtin University with 18 years experience in limnology, including marine, freshwater and temporary inland systems. Her particular areas of expertise include the ecology of Australian inland waters (limnology), ecology of cryptobiotic (dormant) stages and biological soil crusts, particularly in the inland arid regions.

 
Harley Lacy

people_harleyHarley is Managing Director of Outback Ecology and his focus is on the sustainable growth of the company and its employees, promoting the highest level of client satisfaction, and maintaining a competitive and effective consultancy. His science skills focus on tailings decommissioning and mine closure. He co-ordinates projects across Australia in site environmental management, mine closure, tailings research and closure, waste landform design, approvals, audits and rehabilitation techniques. He has contributed to many publications and conferences, and with David Tongway (formerly of CSIRO) led the adoption of Ecosystem Function Analysis as a rehabilitation assessment tool for the mining industry. Prior to forming the company, Harley was Environmental Adviser to Dominion Mining Limited's five mine sites and head office in Perth.

 
Ian Mitchell

people_ianIan joined Outback Ecology in 2006 after spending over 10 years in the IT industry working with oil and gas, and mining companies. At Outback Ecology, Ian works as joint leader of the Mine Closure group, focusing on the continued development and support of the computer based Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure (PRAC) System. PRAC has been developed by Outback Ecology to effectively manage progressive mine closure management plans. Ian also performs several tasks for other service groups within Outback Ecology including undertaking environmental site assessments, preparing approvals documents and annual environmental reports as well as project managing customer accounts. Ian also has extensive GIS experience.

 
Julia Lawson
  • BSc (Environmental Management, Edith Cowan)

people_juliaJulia joined Outback Ecology in 2008 and manages the environmental approvals and impact assessment service group. In this role, Julia co-ordinates large scale baseline studies and is actively involved in all phases of mine approval processes. She has recently worked with Catalpa Resources, Mega Uranium, Atlas Iron and MetalsX in their respective approvals processes. Prior to that Julia worked as an environmental professional for the WA Department of Environment and Conservation, where she gained more than eight years experience in a range of regulatory, technical and project management positions. She has a proven track record in environmental auditing and compliance monitoring, environmental approvals, regulatory enforcement and project management. Julia has travelled extensively throughout the state, conducting mine and industrial site audits/inspections and has a comprehensive knowledge of the industry in Western Australia.

 
Matt Braimbridge

people_mattMatt joined Outback Ecology in 2005, after six years at the UWA Centre for Land Rehabilitation (CLR). At Outback Ecology, Matt works as a senior soil scientist, and leads the Soils and Landforms group, dealing primarily with soil and mine waste characterisation, landform cover and design projects, rehabilitation planning and soil based investigations and research. Clients for recent mining related projects include BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Rio Tinto, KCGM, Chevron, Atlas Iron, Worsley Alumina and Iluka. His mining rehabilitation focus, was built on five years experience with WA Department of Agriculture and Food, developing management approaches and farming systems for grey clay soils at Katanning. In addition, in his previous role at the CLR, Matt managed projects investigating a broad range of rehabilitation issues in the mining industry, with a particular focus on soil characterisation and management for optimal rehabilitation outcomes. Matt's areas of expertise include soil physical properties, soil profile morphology, soil water relations, soil erosion and amelioration, landform design and rehabilitation.

 
Nicola Burne

people_nicola Nicola began working with Outback Ecology in 2006. During her time with Outback Ecology Nicola has provided assistance to various teams, including the Aquatic Ecology, Rehabilitation Monitoring and Completion, Flora and Mine Closure Groups. Nicola's work now involves management of the Mine Closure and Rehabilitation, Monitoring and Completion Service Groups. Her work primarily is focused on completion of environmental compliance inspections, developing effective rehabilitation monitoring programs, detailing conceptual and progressive mine closure systems, compliance reporting, reviewing or developing conceptual completion criteria, and monitoring and reporting using Ecosystem Function Analysis.

 
Richard Floyd

people_richardRichard is the team leader for the Flora and Fauna service groups at Outback Ecology. His main responsibilities include baseline flora and fauna surveys, DRF management plans, weed management plans and taxonomy. Richard is an experienced project manager, coordinator and team leader. Prior to joining Outback Ecology, Richard worked as a principal scientist with responsibility for design and implementation of many large scale ecological surveys, for numerous projects throughout Australia. Recent flora surveying and mapping experience includes: the detailed mapping of vegetation associations with the Greater Taree City Council area; pre-mining flora and fauna surveys for various mining sites within the Hunter Valley of NSW, the Murchison and Pilbara regions of WA; vegetation mapping for mining and associated railroad projects within central Queensland (Surat Basin Rail) and Cross Border Rail projects.

 
Sarah Breheny

people_srahSarah joined Outback Ecology in 2008 and is currently leading the Environmental Management, Compliance and Audits service line. Since joining Outback Ecology she has undertaken project management of baseline studies, environmental approvals projects in Western Australia and South Australia, environmental management plans and provision of mine environmental management support and advice. She holds a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Soil Science from the University of Western Australia. Prior to joining Outback Ecology, Sarah gained 8 years experience as an environmental scientist in Western Australia and the United Kingdom. She is experienced in project management and undertaking contaminated site assessments, acid sulphate soil investigations and management plans, environmental due diligence auditing and other environmental audits, soil and groundwater remediation, greenhouse gas baseline studies and environmental management plans. She has worked as a lead auditor on numerous projects in both the United Kingdom and Australia for both acquisition and due diligence audits.

people_trinity Trinity is a Director and Operations Manager of Outback Ecology and is one of the founding staff members, having joined the company in 2000. Trinity has worked as an on-site environmental manager/advisor across a range of mining (gold, iron ore, coal, base metals) and petroleum operations (on-shore oil and gas) throughout Australia. Trinity has been involved in the development of a number of Outback Ecology's specialist services which has entailed managing projects associated with baseline biological surveys, approvals and impact assessment, auditing and compliance, mine rehabilitation and monitoring and mine closure. His recent focus has been on building the biological survey and assessment capacity of the company to meet the comprehensive baseline survey requirements for recent clients such as BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Atlas Iron, Integra Mining and Rio Tinto.
