Rehabilitation, Monitoring and Completion

Rehabilitation after mining should aim to achieve agreed standards for acceptance or completion. Defined completion criteria, and targeted monitoring toward these standards, are critical in this process. Outback Ecology offers expertise in rehabilitation science, monitoring, investigations, and development of completion criteria. The Rehabilitation, Monitoring and Completion Group within Outback Ecology offers the following services:

Ecosystem Function Analysis

Outback Ecology is an industry leader in the establishment and application of Ecosystem Function Analysis (EFA) on mine sites throughout Australia. With monitoring programmes established at many mine sites since 1998, Outback Ecology has applied the principals of EFA across W.A., Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria and Queensland. Features of the Outback Ecology EFA monitoring program are:

  • Regular staff training and methods review by David Tongway (Co founder of EFA).
  • Report and methodology developed in consultation with regulators, and regulators involved in training.
  • Full safety analysis and planning for each monitoring programme.
  • Standard data entry templates and QA, to ensure data integrity.
  • Comparison of rehabilitation with analogue ecosystems.
  • Access to 8 years of background EFA data as a reference.
  • LFA component can be used in combination with traditional botanical monitoring.

Rehabilitation Classification

  • Rehabilitation Classification (RC) integrates monitoring data to allow a simple assessment of performance.
  • RC includes comparison with regional data, and tracks changes over time.
  • Areas to be considered for bond reconciliation or those requiring further remedial works are identified.
  • RC report is succinct with brief recommendations, presenting monitoring data against regional analogue values.

Rehabilitation Review and Planning

  • Targeted investigations of poorly-performing areas identified from monitoring.
  • Investigation typically includes a review of site history, followed by soil investigation and analysis, as appropriate.
  • Recommendations developed for corrective action to overcome identified constraints.
  • Devoloping rehabilitation management plans.

Developing Criteria for assessing Rehabilitation Completion

  • Review of site commitments, baseline reports and monitoring data.
  • Develop conceptual completion criteria in consultation with site staff and stakeholders.
  • Assistance in developing monitoring programmes to address completion criteria.
